Surf Lessons

The best surf lessons on the Outer Banks are offered by the Kitty Hawk Kayak & Surf School. Herman Hall, our lead instructor, has taught people how to surf on four continents and is the area’s only licensed surf instructor and surf coach through the National Surf School and Instructor Association (NSSIA). www.nssia.org All of our staff are CPR and First Aid certified through the American Red Cross, and trained in accordance with NSSIA surf lesson protocols. A typical surf lesson lasts two hours and begins with a safety talk and the anatomy of a surfboard. Next paddling techniques, balance and feet positioning are discussed. Participants then practice popping up onto the surfboard on the beach before getting wet. The instructor is there to help you catch waves and answer any questions you might have about surfing, the ocean, waves, or surf culture. Remember to always respect the ocean and never paddle out in unsafe, stormy or ocean conditions beyond your ability. At the Kitty Hawk Kayak and Surf School, the best surfer is the one having the most fun.

Private Surf Lessons

If you prefer the undivided attention of our instructor in a private setting, we offer private surf lessons as well. These lessons last one and a half hours and cover all of the material in our introductory surf lesson, just in a one-on-one setting. A perfect choice for people looking for some private instruction, couples, or special parent/child outings.

$85.00 for one person.$150.00 for two people.

Surf Camps With Wave Riding Vehicles

Our Surf Camps are for beginner surfers who are looking to surf as much as they can while at the beach this summer. The camp lasts 3 days and will take you from kook (novice) to shredder (good surfer). Besides learning how to paddle, drop in, go down the line, turn, and judge waves we will also enlighten you on the topics of ocean safety, North Carolina coastal geology, lunar cycles, wave formation, surf history, board shape science, surf lingo and all other things surf related. To make things more radical we are teaming up with WRV to give all surf camp participants from June 14 - August 18 a goodie bag and an afterparty at 12:30 on the 3rd day. This is the best surf camp on the beach; you do the math.

Girl Power Surf Lessons

We also offer girls only lessons for women who would prefer instruction for girls only. Our qualified female instructors know what it takes to help you find your way in the water and will make sure that you get surf culture from a female perspective. We will help make your Blue Crush dream a reality. Call for scheduling details.

$60.00 a person and includes board, leash, and wetsuit

Dates: Offered all year. Reservations suggested during June, July and August.

Surf Lesson and Kayak Tour Package

Get the most out of the Outer Banks coastal environments with our Surf and Kayak Tour Package. Save 15% the regular price by booking both. Enjoy a morning Surf Lesson with an afternoon kayak tour. This can be scheduled for the same day or over the course of your stay on the Outer Banks. After this day you will be worn out, but grinning from ear to ear having learned how to surf and kayak all in one day!!!

$90.00 per person includes a kayak tour of your choice and a surf lesson. These activities can be scheduled any day during your stay. $75.00 per person for a child 12 years old and under.

 

Home Break Lessons

We can come to your beach house and shred in the confines of the sand bars right out front of your house in a private surf lesson setting. This is a great option so all the family can watch you surf and best part is all you gotta do is roll out of bed, get a bathing suite on and walk to the beach; we will do the rest. This is definitely the easiest way to learn to surf.

Surf Guide Service

Do you know how to get to the sickest waves on the Outer Banks in any weather conditions, tides, and swell directions? I do. Let me show you around the Outer Banks on a provately guided surf safari. You are guaranteed to score the best surf the OBX has to offer on that day.

Surf Lesson Photos

A picture of yoruself shredding in thee Outer Banks is a must-have momento from your vacation!!! Lucky for you we are hooked up with the hottest surf photographer on the East Coast, Matt Lusk of Matt Lusk Photography. When not taking pictures for surf magazines Matt works with the Kitty Hawk Kayak & Surf School to take pictures of our surf lessons and provides a CD chock full of all the photos for a great momento of the lesson.

$25.00 per CD.

Stand Up Paddle Board Lessons

Come try the newest surf craze stand up paddle boarding (SUP). This is a great way to exercise your core muscles and stay fit on flatter days or surf from a slightly different perspective using a paddle as a rudder. Our lessons are geared to get you paddling around correctly, focusing on body posture, proper paddling technique, correct muscle movements and balance. Timing, catching waves and steering with the paddle are also discussed. You will be ruling it on a SUP in no time with our expert instruction!!!

$85 for a group stand up paddle board lesson.

$100 for a private lesson stand up paddle board lesson.
